They are ideal for creating tranquil scenery using your own preference of plantings and objects. The crackle finish of this planter also carries a double meaning in Chinese arts and culture. The word crackle in Chinese has a sound similar to the term for year after year. So the crackle finish has the connotation of both longevity and the life cycle. The Chinese art of Penjing, Korean bunjae and Japanese bonsai translate as "tray scenery or tray landscape. Typically this is interpreted as referring to miniature trees but actually it applies to any potted scenery or miniature landscape, including trees, plants, stones or water. The arts origin is likely from Chinese medicine. Special medicinal plants needed to be kept alive yet easily transported. Eventually the functionality gave way to form and we have todays miniature landscape art.

This is a small Talavera Planter Pot with attached Saucer measuring about 4 1/4" tall with a 6 1/2" diameter. The picture shows a typical painting style and the one you receive will look similar to one of the ones shown. Each piece is made of ceramic and painted in the traditional Talavera style. A drainage hole is at the bottom of each piece. Whether you are planting flowers, cactus, or herbs, this will make a colorful addition to any rom. Since each piece is individually hand painted by Talavera artists, no two pieces will be identical and the picture is a representation of the general painting patterns and colors used. Talavera is an art form that has its roots starting in the 16th Century. Original styles have been influenced with Spanish, Arabic, Italian and Chinese origins. The Spaniards brought the technique to Mexico with a distinctive style that came from Talavera de la Reina, a city in the central part of Spain. From there it developed into a contemporary art form that is still extremely popular that many villages were built just to support the making of the numerous forms that can be purchased today.
